Program: Extreme Weather Shelters - Community Link

Agency: Community Link

Resource Number: 70764426
Description
Extreme Weather Winter Shelters

Note: All Extreme Weather Winter Shelters are currently closed. Please check back for updated information.

Cities and Sacramento County follow guidelines adopted in 2012 to determine when to open extreme weather winter shelters.  “Extreme cold/freeze warnings or wind chill warnings indicating weather conditions that endanger human life with credible weather forecasts of extremely cold/freezing weather for more than three days (low daytime temps) accompanied by night temps of [32 degrees Fahrenheit] or less,". These circumstances will prompt the opening of winter shelters.

In addition, there are multiple regional HART (Homeless Assistance Resource Teams) organizations that work with local churches to offer a rotating emergency shelter program during winter. Guests are shuttled to the church hosting the shelter for the night and returned to the in-take location the next morning. Shelters provide a hot dinner and breakfast-to-go and a sleeping bag and cot. Space is limited.
