No Cost to Residents
The Office of Emergency Services offers no-cost sand for Nevada County residents every year between November 1st and April 30th.
Please Note: Sand is available on a first-come-first-served basis, while supplies last. Residents are advised to please bring their own sandbags and only take what is needed. 
Sandbags are available for purchase online or at various local businesses such as:
  • B&C Hardware
  • A to Z Supply
  • Hills Flat Lumber Co.
Self-service Loading
Bring a shovel and sandbags to take advantage of this no-cost service. Please only take what you plan to use for the protection of your personal property. This will enable us to continue to offer this free service.
Pick-Up Locations
Sand is available at the following locations:
  • Next to the Nevada County Warehouse located at: the corner of Highway 49 and East Broad Street, Nevada City, CA 95959
  • Penn Valley Fire Protection District is located at: 10513 Spenceville Road, Penn Valley, CA 95946
  • North San Juan Community Hall located at: 10057 Reservoir Street, North San Juan, CA 95960
  • Higgins Fire Department located at: 10106 Combie Road, Auburn, CA 95602
The Office of Emergency Services offers free sand and sandbags for Nevada County residents every year between October 1st and April 30th. During this timeframe, sand and sandbags are available 24/7 and if they run out over a weekend, a message can be left at 530-265-1515 and they will be refilled on Monday.

*** Town of Truckee has self-service sand and sandbags available at the USFS into the week of 1/16/23 ***

In Eastern Nevada County - On occasion, Truckee Public Works puts out bags and sand for a self-service sandbag distribution. May occur at the USFS Station located at 10811 Stockrest Springs Road in Truckee. It's near the Humane Society. Public Works phone number is 530-582-7707.
