Description
Department of Social Services will pay up to $1,350 toward burial or cremation expenses of any individual with very limited means in Connecticut. (It is not necessary to be a citizen or legal resident). DSS will deduct from the current maximum benefit ($1,350),  (1) the amount in any revocable or irrevocable funeral fund, (2) any prepaid funeral contract, and (3) the face value of any life insurance policy owned by the recipient. Also deducted is the net value of all liquid assets in the recipient's estate.

Program Delivery
Eligibility: No income restriction; however, DSS will deduct any contributions over $3,400 from the maximum benefit and specifies that such contributions include those from all sources, including friends, relatives, all other persons, organizations, agencies, veterans' programs, and other benefit programs assets may offset all or part of the benefit; Burial benefit is not available for miscarried or stillborn babies

Application Process: Application must be made within one year of the date of death and may be filed by the funeral director, a family member, or any individual who made the funeral arrangements; Payment for the funerals can only be made to the funeral director, cemetery or crematory; Family members and individuals cannot be reimbursed or receive payment from the Department
