SSD is a financial assistance program for those people who have earned enough Social Security "credits" to qualify for disability on their own work record. Benefits are paid to eligible workers with a disability that prevents them from doing work that they have done in the past and that is expected to last for at least 1 year or to result in death. Benefits are not paid for partial or short-term disabilities. Spouses, widows, widowers, sons or daughters of SSD recipients may also qualify for benefits under certain circumstances. If currently employed, workers' earnings are limited. The process to approve disability benefits takes approximately 3-4 months. If approved, benefits start on the sixth month following the approval decision. If denied, the applicant has 60 days to appeal the decision in writing.
Note: Recipients have two options for receiving benefits - direct deposit or debit card.

Eligibility: Ages 0 through 64; Must have earned enough work credits; Must have full disability expected to last at least 1 yr or to result in death; If currently employed, earnings are limited; Eligibility is NOT based upon income or assets.

The Legal Assistance Resource Center of CT (LARCC) suggests that you contact a lawyer or call Statewide Legal Services as soon as you ask for a hearing or case review.
