Description

EMERGENCY FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE: Assists low-income families with children under the age of 21 who are experiencing a financial crisis. Must present an eviction notice or turn-off notice from utility company that services have been or will be cut off or other proof of an emergency. Emergency grants are provided for disasters, eviction prevention, lack of heating fuel, utility bill turn-off notices (not including water) or burial assistance. May also be able to assist with first month's rent for individuals living in Harford County at the time of application. Grant may be used only once in a 24-month period. May assist those in subsidized/public housing.   

Note: Must present proof that the emergency was not caused by a family member quitting a job. There must be a legitimate reason for moving to use the security deposit. The maximum grant is $500 and is accessible once every two years.

Eligibility Must have at least one related child under 21 living in the household. Must provide proof household can maintain ongoing monthly rent and utilities. Available to a household only once in a 24-month period.

Application Process Submit an application online at https://benefits.maryland.gov or visit our Swan Creek Office at 2029 Pulaski Highway, Havre de Grace, MD 21078 for assistance. On the mymdthink.maryland.gov website, the Emergency Assistance option is found under the Housing & Energy Assistance section.
Documents Required Identification, social security number, proof of address such as lease, utility or phone bill, rent book or receipt, mortgage statement. Proof of income for 2 months, proof of other cash or non cash resources. Proof of the emergency and proof of household expenses such as most recent BG&E gas or electric bill most recent fuel oil or propane bill that shows the company’s name, address, and telephone number, receipt or written statement of child care costs, real estate tax bill or recent doctor or hospital bills, for expenses paid in last 30 days.
Normal Wait Times Applications are received the next day if submitted online.
