Description LEGAL REPRESENTATION: Provides legal representation to income eligible individuals who have been arrested or summoned for a jailable offense.

INTAKE PROCEDURE:
---INCARCERATED CLIENT: Incarcerated clients will first meet with a commissioner to determine eligibility. If a client has not seen a commissioner prior to incarceration, a family member or the client should contact the public defender’s office at: (410)-295-8800 for further instruction. 

---"ON THE STREET" CLIENT: Clients who are out on bail, on the own recognizance, or charged with a jailable offense must contact one of the following District Court Commissioner’s Offices at:

The hours of operation for both commissioner office locations are 24 hours/7 days a week
 
INTAKE DOCUMENTATION: These documents may be required by the Commissioner’s Office. The Public Defender’s office no longer require these documents. Clients must bring identification, case number (s), charging documents (summary of charges, summons), and verification of income for the last 30 days (2 pay stubs if paid biweekly, 4 if paid weekly). If no income, bring award letters (social security, food stamps, or other public assistance) to the interview.

Upon receipt of a Final Approval by the commissioner’s office, you must contact the public defender’s office listed in the section of the Final Qualification marked “IMPORTANT” for further instruction and attorney information.

Eligibility Indigent persons who have committed a crime or misdemeanor (based on income and other criteria, e.g. family size/med bills in extreme circumstances).
Languages Offered Accommodations can be made, depending on need.
Program Fees Administration fee for adults is $50 and $25 for juveniles (17 and under).

Volunteer Requirements 16 and older.
Volunteer Duties Needed for clerical work and law clerk assistance.
