Description	OVERVIEW: Provides legal representation to income eligible individuals who have been arrested or charged with a crime for which they could be incarcerated. Also provides representation in contempt for failure to pay child support. Services provided in Circuit District and Juvenile Court. CRIME & TRAFFIC CASES: Individuals first go through intake by the commissioner located at the Detention Center. After they have been classified by area of incarceration, they are interviewed to see if they are eligible for a public defender. Violation of probation and juvenile clients can apply at the Office of the Public Defender's. They should contact the nearest office by telephone to ascertain what documentation they need to bring to the office for the interview to prove income-eligibility. Client can apply anywhere in Maryland. Commissioner has 72 hours to let them know if they qualify.
