Denver Urban Ministries - Outreach Services

Provides emergency and stabilization services for all people in need.

Outreach Services provides the essentials of food, rent/utility assistance, infant items, and legal advice to enable those in crisis to reach a level of stabilization.

Services Offered

·         Food Pantry. Clients may receive a three-four day equivalency of food six times annually with 30 days between visits, including government food commodities and fresh produce, dairy, and bakery items weekly. Required documents: Photo ID, Piece of Mail dated within the last 45 days.

·         Infant Corner. Necessary infant items for struggling new parents, including: formula, diapers, and layettes. Clients must wait 30 days betwwn visits and must bring a photo ID.

·         Rent and Utility Assistance. Emergency rent and utility payments to prevent homelessness. No walk-ins. Clients must call the appropriate hotline number.

·         Legal Advice. Informal legal advice on non-criminal matters offered twice monthly by a local volunteer law firm.

Eligibility Low-income, at-risk, or homeless persons. For rental assistance persons must live in Denver city and county. For utility assistance persons must live in Colorado, have been given a shut off notice, and been denied LEAP assistance. Food assistance can be accessed six times a year, with thirty days in between.

Application Process For rental assistance, call rent hotline M-Th between 8:30-9AM and leave message with number to be reached at. For utility assistance, call utility hotline and leave message with account number and number to be reached at. For food, infant and legal assistance clinics, drop by offices at given times.
Documents Required For food bank, bring ID and a piece of mail dated within the last 45 days. For infant clinic bring ID. For legal clinic, bring ID and any relevant legal paperwork.

Normal Wait Times Utility and rent assistance vary, but food, infant and legal clinics offer immediate assistance.
Volunteer Requirements A minimum of 4 hours of orientation covering emergency procedures, DenUM rules and program policies, resource management, and facility tour. At least one hour of job shadowing and supervised training on direct service procedures. Continuing education throughout the year. A mentor program with experienced staff members is available to new volunteers. Also, a 2-4 hour commitments during open business hours.
