Description
ADULT PROTECTIVE SERVICES: Investigates allegations of abuse, neglect, self-neglect, or exploitation of vulnerable adults who lack the physical or mental capacity to provide for their daily needs or protect their own interests. Persons who report suspected incidents of abuse and neglect are protected under the law from any civil liability.
DEFINITIONS:
- Abuse: any physical injury sustained by cruel or inhumane treatment as a result of a malicious act by another person.
- Neglect: willful deprivation of food, clothing, medical treatment, rehabilitative therapy, shelter, supervision, or daily hygiene or grooming needs.
- Exploitation: the misuse of a vulnerable adult, their money, or property.
Any banking institution, health practitioner, police officer, or human service worker who has reason to believe that a vulnerable adult is in danger is required to report that fact to the local department of social services. Any concerned person may also make such a report.
