 Description
ADULT PROTECTIVE SERVICES: Offers services to individuals who lack the mental or physical capacity to sufficiently provide for their daily needs to protect their health, safety, and welfare. An adult at risk of endangerment is one who is maltreated, has inadequate food, clothing or shelter, or lacks essential medical care.

Process: DSS investigates reports of neglect and abuse, and arranges for services to remedy the situation. Legal mandates require adults in neglect cases to be seen within 5 days and in abuse cases within 24 hours for emergencies, 5 days for non-emergencies.  The local Department will determine what constitutes an emergency. For persons under age 65, if no family member or individual is available to serve as guardian, DSS will be appointed guardian. Area Agency on Aging is appointed guardian when persons are age 65 and older.
