Agency: NEW HAVEN, CITY OF

Resource Number: 17313439
Alternate name: LIVABLE CITY INITIATIVE

Description
Oversees permit application process and investigates violations of housing code, building code, or zoning regulations.

OTHER INFORMATION:
The Livable City Initiative (LCI) does the inspections for housing code violations in any privately owned rental property in the City of New Haven. This applies whether or not the rental is a market rate or subsidized property, or if the tenant has the portable Section 8 subsidy. NOTE: For rental properties owned and managed by the Housing Authority of the City of New Haven (HANH), any report of a housing code violation must go first to HANH's maintenance division for action. If HANH should fail to correct the problem, then the tenant can contact LCI.

Unpublished NotesWhen a New Haven resident has a heat emergency, and there is a housing code issue, LCI will use whatever resources it has to help the person through the immediate crisis. However, LCI has no authority over Community Action Agency and cannot advocate for people who are having difficulty getting energy assistance from Community Action Agency.

ALSO, if a resident has no heat, even it is through non payment of a bill, AND it is extremely cold, posing a danger to the people in the household, LCI will try to find a place for the household to go; however, LCI will try to work with the landlord or encourage the family to stay with relatives or friends before they place them in a hotel/motel.
