Description
Wage and Workplace Standards Division enforces State of Connecticut worker protection laws. The Division also encourages and helps employers to comply with labor laws by offering seminars and educational materials. The division is comprised of three separate compliance units:
1) Employment Regulation and Minors Compliance Unit administers laws concerning conditions in the workplace. The two major areas of enforcement are hours and work of minor employees, and family and medical leave. Other areas involve registration of employment agencies, personnel files, meal periods, drug testing, smoking in the workplace, insurance cancellation, and polygraph testing.
2) Wage and Hour Compliance Unit: enforces the legal and proper payment of wages and benefits to employees. Wages that are enforceable include the minimum wage, overtime payment for services rendered, such as commission, payment of all monies due on a regular payday, and fringe benefits upon termination according to the company's policy.
3) Public Contract Compliance Unit: enforces the payment of prevailing wage on public work projects done by the state or political subdivisions. The unit monitors projects on a routine and complaint basis for compliance with a variety of other laws affecting workers.
