Description
Administers and monitors the federally funded supplemental food program of the U.S. Agricultural Department Women and children who are income eligible and at risk nutritionally receive eWIC cards for the purchase of food. Health Department contracts with local agencies and health departments to provide service. Emphasis is to promote good nutrition, and the education component is stressed. WIC Unit at DPH also certifies retailers to be able to accept eWIC cards as payment for food. Farmers' markets will also accept eWIC for purchases. WIC foods include: infant cereal, baby foods, iron-fortified cereal, vitamin C-rich fruit or vegetable juice, eggs, milk, cheese, peanut butter, dried and canned beans/peas, canned fish, soy-based beverages, tofu, fruits and vegetables, whole wheat bread, and other whole-grain products.

Program Delivery
Eligibility: Resident of Connecticut; Pregnant women; Postpartum women up to six months, regardless of how pregnancy ends; Breastfeeding women up to one year after delivery; fathers, guardians, and custodial relatives can receive WIC for their infants and children up to their fifth birthday; Income at or below 185% of the Federal Poverty Level; Must have a medical or nutritional risk; U.S. Citizenship or permanent residency status is not required
Application Process: Intake is through designated WIC Health Clinics; NO DIRECT SERVICE at DPH
Documents Required: Applicant should call to verify documents needed before going in to apply; Documents needed to support eligibility include: Proof of identity, Proof of residence, Proof of income and family size and Certification Form provided by health care provider to verify medical or nutritional risk
