Description

Provides specific nutritious foods and nutrition education to eligible pregnant women, postpartum women up to six months regardless of how pregnancy ends, breastfeeding women up to one year after delivery, and infants and children up to their fifth birthday. Fathers, guardians, and custodial relatives can receive WIC for their children up to their fifth birthday. Applicants who are income eligible (at or below 185% of the Federal Poverty Level) and at risk nutritionally receive an electronic benefits card (eWIC Card) to purchase healthy foods. Recipients are re-certified annually to determine if medical or nutritional risk exists. WIC foods include: infant cereal, baby foods, iron-fortified cereal, vitamin C-rich fruit or vegetable juice, eggs, milk, cheese, peanut butter, dried and canned beans/peas, canned fish, soy-based beverages, tofu, fruits and vegetables, whole wheat bread, and other whole-grain products.

Program Delivery
Eligibility: Resident of Connecticut; Pregnant women; Postpartum women up to six months, regardless of how pregnancy ends; Breastfeeding women up to one year after delivery; fathers, guardians, and custodial relatives can receive WIC for their infants and children up to their fifth birthday; Income at or below 185% of the Federal Poverty Level; Must have a medical or nutritional risk; U.S. Citizenship or permanent residency status is not required

Documents Required: Applicant should call to verify documents needed before going in to apply; Documents needed to support eligibility include: Proof of identity, Proof of residence, Proof of income and family size and Certification Form provided by health care provider to verify medical or nutritional risk
