Description
Basic life skills, including reading, money management, and cooking are taught by program staff. 
Other information: Reading: a variety of learning methods are used, including reading out loud, silent reading, role-playing, verbal testing, written testing, and book reports. Participants work in groups, reading a variety of materials, including newspapers, magazines, grocery store fliers, books and food labels. 
Money management: When participants have a minimum of $50.00 saved or earned, they are taken to a bank to open a checking account and a savings account. Knowledge of using a calculator and basic writing skills are emphasized. Participants learn how to make deposits and withdrawals, write checks and balance a monthly statement. 
House cleaning: Participants are assigned certain tasks each week, including cooking a meal, menu planning and nutrition. Participants are taught how to look for sale items, clip coupons, and plan a weekly menu. Nutrition is stressed and junk foods are discouraged.
