SFBFS’s CalFresh Outreach Team helps individuals determine if they are eligible for CalFresh and helps eligible individuals apply for CalFresh. Assistance is offered by phone or text only (in-person appointments and walk-ins are not offered).

CalFresh Work and Community Engagement Requirements:

Beginning June 1, 2026, some people must complete a CalFresh work and community engagement rules screening with their county at application or their next recertification, and every recertification thereafter.

Individuals can find out if they may be required to meet the CalFresh work and community engagement requirements to keep their CalFresh benefits, or whether they may be excused from these new requirements by using the CalFresh Work and Community Engagement Requirements: Pre-Screening Tool.

Program Delivery
Eligibility: Low-income individuals and families whose gross household income is at or below 200% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines (effective as of January 2025). Must have at least one US citizen or permanent resident in the household. Households with an elderly member can deduct certain medical and shelter expenses from their net income.

Income-Based Eligibility Guidelines (valid 10/1/26 - 9/30/27):
Household size of 1: monthly income of $2,660; annual income of $31,920
Household size of 2: monthly income of $3,608; annual income of $43,296
Household size of 3: monthly income of $4,554; annual income of $54,648
Household size of 4: monthly income of $5,500; annual income of $66,000
Household size of 5: monthly income of $6,448; annual income of $77,376
Household size of 6: monthly income of $7,394; annual income of $88,728
Household size of 7: monthly income of $8,340; annual income of $100,080
Household size of 8: monthly income of $9,288; annual income of $111,456

Add $948 for each additional person in the household.

Households may qualify for "Expedited Service" if the cost of their housing and utilities is more than this month's income combined with the amount of their liquid resources, such as cash and savings accounts. Or they may qualify if their cash, savings, stocks, etc., are worth no more than $100 and this month's income is less than $150. Or they may qualify if they are a migrant or seasonal farmworker and have $100 or less in cash.


The following are eligible for CalFresh:
- Citizens of the United States
- United States Nationals (such as persons born in American Samoa or Swains Island)
- Cuban and Haitian Entrants (CHE)
- Lawful Permanent Residents (LPR) who have met the 5-year waiting period or are exempt from the waiting period
- Citizens of Micronesia, the Marshall Islands, or Palau

Starting 4/1/2026, the following will no longer be eligible for CalFresh:
- Asylees
- Refugee
- Parolees (except for CHEs)
- Individuals with deportation or removal withheld
- Conditional entrants
- Survivors of trafficking
- Battered non-citizens
- Iraqis or Afghans with Special Immigrant Visas (SIV) who are not LPRs
- Certain Afghan Nationals granted parole between 7/31/2021 and 9/30/2023
- Certain Ukrainian Nationals granted parole between 2/24/2022 and 9/30/2024

Program Fees: No fee.
Documents Required: Call for details.
Normal Wait Time: The county has up to 30 days to approve or deny an application. If applicant needs food before 30 days, they may be eligible for Expedited Services.
