Program: California Department of Justice Office of the Attorney General - Registry of Charitable Trusts

Agency: California Department of Justice Office of the Attorney General

Resource Number: 4092010
Description

Provides access to public files on active charitable organizations within California. Supervises California charities and commercial fundraisers for charitable purposes.

Offers online searchable information about charitable organizations. The Registered Charity Database can be searched to see if a charity is registered and reporting activities as required by law. Individuals can obtain registration information by telephone or by visiting the website. The website instructions help interpret yearly financial reports (Form 990 or 990 EZ). Financial reports may be viewed using the Registry Search tool on the website.

Charitable organizations must register and file annual financial reports, whether or not they sought tax-exempt status. Some exceptions are churches, colleges, hospitals, and schools. Eligible nonprofit organizations may hold fundraising raffles under certain circumstances, with a $20 raffle registration fee.
