Public assistance program that provides cash aid and services to eligible families that have a child in the home.

Families eligible for CalWORKs may also be eligible for additional services such as:

  • Cal-Learn: Statewide program for pregnant and parenting teens. Aims to help teens graduate from high school, become independent, and form healthy families.
  • Homeless Assistance: Families who are homeless can apply for special need payment to help meet costs for temporary and permanent housing or to assist with the payment of rent arrearages.
  • Child Care: Aided parents who are employed or enrolled in approved Welfare-to-Work (WTW) activities may be eligible for subsidized child care services. A separate application is not required.

Program Delivery
Eligibility: Basic eligibility factors for a child(ren) and a needy parent(s) or caretaker relative include
deprivation, age, property, and residency.

Generally, services are available to:
- Families that have a child in the home who has been deprived of parental support or care because of the death, disability, or absence of at least one parent.
- Families with a child whose parents are in the home, but the principal earner is unemployed.
- Needy caretaker relatives of a child.

The amount of a family's monthly assistance payment depends on several factors, including the number of people who are eligible, special needs of any eligible family members, and the net income of the family.
Languages: Translation services available for multiple languages upon request, American Sign Language Interpreter available on request, Farsi, Russian, Spanish, Vietnamese, English, Chinese
Application Process: Call, walk in, or visit www.benefitscal.com to apply. Application process includes completion of eligibility questions, forms, and an interview with a case manager.

Immediate need payments may be made for families with emergencies while the CalWORKs application is being processed.
