Description
CalFresh (formerly known as Food Stamps) provides monthly assistance for low- or no-income individuals and families to purchase nutritious food. Issues benefits on an Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) card that can be used to purchase food at many grocery stores and farmers' markets. Program is federally known as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).
Californians are encouraged to take steps to prevent EBT theft. Visit the California Department of Social Services website for security tips and resources. To report a lost or stolen EBT card, call 877-328-9677 or 916-875-8908 (county office).
EBT cardholders can manage their CalFresh benefits using the ebtEDGE mobile app and/or website. Cardholders can check their account balance, view transaction history, freeze/unfreeze their cards, and more. Click here for more information.

Address Change Reporting Procedure:
As of 4/1/2023, when a CalFresh customer reports an address change to the county, the county will encourage them to submit updated shelter costs.
- If updated shelter costs are reported, the county will act upon the new information.
- If costs are not reported, no changes will be made and the county will follow up at the next SAR or recertification, whichever comes first.
CalFresh Work and Community Engagement Requirements:
As of 6/1/2026, certain individuals must complete a CalFresh work and community engagement rules screening with their county at application or their next recertification, and every recertification thereafter.
Individuals can find out if they may be required to meet these rules to keep their CalFresh benefits, or whether they may be excused from these new requirements by using the CalFresh Work and Community Engagement Requirements: Pre-Screening Tool.
