Description

Provides assistance to eligible indigent residents of Sacramento County who are at least eighteen years old, are unemployed or verified unemployable, and have no other means of support. Aims to provide short-term financial assistance and limited services that will enable individuals to either find employment or obtain support from another source.

The eligibility for GA and the amount of monthly assistance received depends on a number of factors, including the individual's housing situation and net income.

Program Delivery
Eligibility: The individual must be 18 years or older; unemployed, employed less than 100 hours per month, or incapacitated due to a verified physical, mental health, or functional disability; and have no dependent children.

In addition, the individual must meet all of the following residence criteria:
- Be physically present in Sacramento County.
- Be a Sacramento County resident for at least fifteen days.
- Verify intent to continue to reside in Sacramento County.


An employable person will be offered employment services through community partners and must:
- Register for work with CalJOBS through the Employment Development Department.
- Apply for Unemployment Insurance Benefits (UIB) if potentially eligible.

An unemployable person must do all of the following:
- Cooperate in providing/obtaining verification of their incapacity.
- Participate in any appropriate rehabilitation plans.
- Apply for SSI/SSP and/or other disability benefits as determined appropriate by the department and cooperate fully with that agency’s requirements.


Please note: Individuals who live with a spouse and/or child receiving CalWORKs must contact the CalWORKs worker and request to be included on the CalWORKs grant.

Application Process: Walk in at the Susie Gaines-Mitchell Bureau to apply in person. Call to report General Assistance fraud.
Payment methods:
Program Fees: No fee.
Documents Required: Photo ID, social security card, income verification, shelter cost statement/living arrangements, and disability verification (if applicable).

If other documents/verifications are required, the individual will be informed at the intake appointment and given time to submit the documents.
