Description

Operates the 24-Hour Child Abuse Hotline and investigates reports of abuse or neglect to determine if a child's health or safety is at risk. All reports of suspected abuse and neglect should be made by calling the hotline. Do not use the email "[email protected]" to report child abuse.

The Emergency Response Unit:

  • Investigates complaints of child abuse and/or neglect
  • Determines the family's need for services
  • Makes referrals to other CPS programs and/or community programs
  • Continues ongoing investigation after removal of a child
  • Initiates Juvenile Court proceedings for the protection of the child
  • Determines if the child can be returned home safely
  • Prepares court reports
  • Maintains a list of CPS Approved Parenting Classes and Resources

Program Delivery
Eligibility: Children in Sacramento County who are under the age of 18 and are victims of, or are at risk of, abuse, neglect, exploitation, or parental absence by their parents, guardians, or other caregivers (as defined by state statute).
Languages: Most languages by arrangement, American Sign Language Interpreter available on request, English
Application Process: All reports of suspected abuse or neglect should be made by calling the Child Abuse Hotline. Do not use the email "[email protected]​" to report child abuse. Dial 9-1-1 if the child's life is at imminent risk.

If you are a mandated reporter, please follow these steps:
Step 1: Reports must be called in to the 24-hour CPS Hotline.
Step 2: During the call, obtain the passwords needed to complete the online Suspected Child Abuse Report.
Step 3: Within 2 working days, complete an online Suspected Child Abuse Report.
Step 4: Once forms have been completed, save a copy of the report.
