As of January 1, 2025, per Senate Bill 159, health insurance coverage through the California Major Risk Medical Insurance Program (MRMIP) is no longer be available. This means coverage under MRMIP has ended as of 12/31/2024, but other health insurance options may be available. Description

Provides health insurance for Californians unable to obtain coverage in the individual health insurance market because of their pre-existing conditions. Californians qualifying for the program participate in the cost of their coverage by paying premiums. As of January 1, 2025, per Senate Bill 159, health insurance coverage through the California Major Risk Medical Insurance Program (MRMIP) is no longer available.

Program Delivery
Eligibility: To qualify, an individual must:
- Be a California resident.
- Not be eligible for both Part A and Part B of Medicare, unless eligible solely because of end-stage renal disease.
- Not be eligible to purchase any health insurance for continuation of benefits under Cobra or CalCobra
- Be unable to secure adequate coverage
Languages: Translation services are available for multiple languages upon request. American Sign Language Interpreter available on request, English
Application Process: Call to learn more. Individuals must complete the enrollment application in the handbook online, and mail the completed enrollment application with all necessary attachments.
Payment methods:
Program Fees: Individuals must pay premium costs. Premium costs vary - call for more information. There is no application fee for applying to the MRMIP.

o The supporting documentation indicating eligibility for the MRMIP
o Copy of denial for individual insurance within the previous 12 months; or if eligible for Medicare Part A and Part B, a copy of a Medicare letter explaining eligibility solely due to end-stage renal disease
