Vehicles sold by private parties are not required to be in compliance with Connecticut's emissions law at the time of sale. However, since a vehicle's emissions compliance status is unaffected by an ownership change, the new owner of the vehicle should verify the vehicle's emissions due date as soon as possible as it might be either overdue or due shortly after the date of purchase. To determine the emissions compliance status of the vehicle, call the DMV Emissions Division or log on to http://www.ctemissions.com
Owner must have the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) ready when calling DMV Emissions Division or log on to the website. If the vehicle is NOT in compliance it must be tested within 30 days of its registration or the owner will be subject to a $20 late fee. Motor vehicle dealers are required to have used vehicles emissions compliant prior to being sold.

*If your vehicle is in compliance, it must be tested by the listed due date. If the due date is within six months of the date of the registration of the vehicle, you will NOT receive an official notification letter to remind you of the upcoming test due date
