State Unemployment Benefits

3/20/20 Update: Any worker affected by the pandemic can apply. The waiting week has been waived. All applicants are encouraged to use the website as phone lines remain busy. Unemployed workers should Apply for Benefits Online 6 am - 8 pm Sunday - Friday rather than calling when possible due to expected long wait times. In most cases, online applications wil be processed much more quickly than phone calls. Assistance over the phone is only being provided to individuals needing to reset their password or apply for benefits when they are unable to do so online. If an individual does need to call, assistance can be provided in any language 8 am - 4:30 pm Monday - Friday.

Application Schedule
The table below lists the day and time to start an application based on the last digit of an individual's Social Security number. For example, a person with the Social Security number XXX-XX-XXX6 would apply on Wednesday.
 
Last digit of an individual's Social Security number and corresponding day of the week they should apply online:
  • 0, 1 or 2 - Monday
  • 3, 4 or 5 - Tuesday
  • 6, 7, 8 or 9 - Wednesday
  • Any number - Thursday and Friday
Important Things to Know
  • The date of application will not affect the amount of benefits an individual will be paid
  • If an individual already has an Unemployment Insurance account, they can still log in anytime
  • individuals should not call the Unemployment Insurance office to ask about the status of their application. Their online account will be updated when more information is available.
  • Within a few days of applying for benefits, the applicant will be sent an Information Handbook and password so they can access their account.

7/22/20 Update for Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation: The additional $600 weekly payment ends Saturday, July 25. Individuals will still receive their regular weekly unemployment benefit payment. If an individual remains unemployed, they should keep requesting benefits every week. More Information

Appeal Process
The Minnesota Unemployment Insurance Law provides an opportunity for a fair and impartial hearing to any individual who disagrees with a determination issued. The Appeal Hearing Guide explains how the apeal phone hearing process works.

Appeals must be filed electronically, mailed or faxed within the timeframe specified on the determination to be appealed. Instructions for filing an appeal are printed in all determinations.
