OVERVIEW: A community based human services non profit agency providing supports and services to people living with mental illness, physical and developmental disabilities in Charles, Calvert and St. Mary's Counties.
SERVICES: 1) INFORMATION AND REFERRAL: Provides information and referral for housing, attendant care, education, employment, recreation, health care, legal services, architectural barrier removal, SSI/SSDI, transportation, adaptive technology and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
2) INDEPENDENT LIVING SKILLS TRAINING: Teaches individuals skills necessary for acquiring, maintaining, or increasing their independence. Training may take place in individually or small group setting; in the home or community.
3) PEER COUNSELING: 51% of the staff at SMCIL are people with disabilities. They have first hand experience in living with a disability and effectively dealing with barriers.
4) ADVOCACY: Provide individual and system advocacy to obtain needed services and supports. i.e. employment, SSI/SSDI, housing, community services and recreation/leisure activities.
5) SPEAKERS BUREAU: Conducts meetings or seminars related to issues affecting persons with disabilities.
6) NEWSLETTER: Newsletter published quarterly. Covers issues relating to independent living.
7) AMERICAN WITH DISABILITIES ACT (ADA): Training, workshops and consultation for employees and employers in workplace accommodations. Voluntary compliance review for business seeking to better serve their customers with disabilities. General information and advice.
