Description
|
The Volunteer Income Tax Preparation Assistance Program (VITA) provides communities with free federal and state e-filing assistance. VITA partners with community organizations such as United Way of Southwest Alabama to recruit and train volunteers to assist individuals with tax preparation and to educate taxpayers about Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and other tax credits for which they may qualify. The VITA Programs also provide free tax services to those 60 years of age and older through the Tax Counseling for the Elderly Program (TCE). Additionally, the facilitated Self-Assistance program (FSA) allows tax payers to prepare and e-file their own tax return using brand-name, online software from any place with Internet access, at anytime, and at no cost.

Volunteer Requirements
|
All volunteers must pass an ethics (standards of conduct) exam, and volunteers who prepare tax returns must certify in tax law. Training is provided for volunteers who serve in the program.

Volunteer Duties
|
Volunteers may act as appointment schedulers, greeters, tax return preparers and site coordinators.
